KAS Syllabus - Full Details

The KPSC hires candidates for various Group A and Group B job openings through the GPE examination. The KPSC GPE is the main entry point for an individual to make a Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) career. The KAS officers have a good chance to be promoted to IAS officers if they maintain an excellent performance record. The KPSC sets the KAS syllabus for the GPE examination. This KAS syllabus is generic for posts of Dy. Superintendent of Police, Assistant Commissioner, Tehsildar, Assistant Labour Commissioner, and so on.
Candidates should note that KPSC KAS is also short for Karnataka Public Service Commission – Kerala Administrative Service.

KAS Syllabus

The KPSC KAS examination is held in three different stages:
Stage 1 is the preliminary examination that consists of two papers, both of which are objective type (MCQs).
Stage 2 comprises the mains. There are 7 papers in all that include descriptive/essay type questions. Previously there were 2 optional papers; however, those have been eliminated now.
Stage 3 is the interview.

KAS Syllabus for Preliminary Examination

The GPE examination helps to filter the candidates for the main examination. Based on the KPSC GPE 9th Amendment Rules established in 2011, the KAS Prelims exam comprises two papers.

In the KAS Syllabus of the preliminary examination, the level of mental ability questions is generally of the SSLC (10th standard) level, and the rest of the questions are of degree level. The KAS syllabus is very similar to the IAS syllabus for the preliminary exam.

KAS Syllabus for the Mains Examination

Based on the KPSC KAS Exam Pattern, only those candidates who clear the KAS Prelims examination successfully can appear for the main examination. The main examination comprises nine theory papers. Out of these nine papers, two (English and Kannada Language) are qualifying in nature.
There is quite a bit of overlap of the KPSC KAS Syllabus with the UPSC Syllabus other than sections related only to the Karnataka state.

KAS Syllabus Interview

The aim of the interview as a part of the KAS syllabus examination is to assess if the candidate is suitable or appropriate for a job in the public service. The interview test is set up to evaluate if the candidate is mentally cut out for the post. In general terms, we can say that this assessment is not only to evaluate a candidate's intellectual qualities but also the social traits and the candidates interest level in current affairs. Some of the qualities to be evaluated are:

KAS syllabus for the main examination also comprises the KAS interviews. A panel of members of the JKPSC conducts the KAS interview. Experts assist the commission in the Behavioural Sciences and Public Administration, as may be nominated/selected by the commission's Chairman.
