Number of vacancies: The total number of vacancies for different civil services posts determines the overall competition and subsequently affects the cut-off. Higher vacancies may lead to a relatively lower cut-off, while fewer vacancies can result in a higher cut-off.
Difficulty level of the exam: The complexity and difficulty of the examination papers play a crucial role in determining the cut-off. If the question papers are more challenging, the cut-off may be lower, whereas easier papers may lead to a higher cut-off.
Reservation policy: The UPSC follows reservation policies for various categories, such as SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe), OBC (Other Backward Classes), and EWS (Economically Weaker Sections). The cut-off for these categories is usually lower compared to the general category.
Performance of candidates: The performance of candidates appearing for the examination also impacts the cut-off. If the overall performance is exceptional, the cut-off may be higher, while a relatively weaker performance may result in a lower cut-off.
Previous year's cut-off: The previous year's cut-off marks serve as a reference point and can influence the current year's cut-off. It provides an indication of the expected minimum score required to qualify for the next stage.
Overall competition: The level of competition varies each year based on the number of aspirants, their preparation, and other factors. Higher competition can lead to a higher cut-off, while lower competition may result in a lower cut-off.
