Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) is the civil service of Karnataka state in India.[1] The Public Service Commission conducts exams to recruit candidates for the service. These young officers recruited by KPSC take up various administrative posts at the district and state levels. At the start, they play the role of Sub Divisional Magistrate and, on promotion, Additional District Magistrates. After promotion to IAS, they take up various key positions at the district level as Deputy Commissioners and also equivalent IAS cadre jobs at the state level.

Candidates who want to apply for the KAS Exam need to fulfil certain criteria.
The application process of KPSC is online. The application form is available online on the website. The candidate needs to follow the instructions with precision and fill up the form online. They need to upload a scanned copy of their passport size photograph and their signature. They have to choose their exam centre and their preferred language. The aspirant also needs to pay an application fee. The table below shows the different fees applicable for different candidates.

The KAS Exam is split into three phases - Prelims, Mains, and Interview. The candidate first has to clear the Prelims. Once they have cleared the Prelims, then they can sit for the Mains. After clearing the Mains, the candidate has to face the Interview, the final round.
Prelims contain objective-type questions. English is the language of the question paper.

The Mains Exam is 3 hours.
The Mains exam has descriptive-type questions. The medium of the exam is English. However, the Language paper is set in the respective language.
The marks that a candidate secures in the Mains are added to the final results of the exam.
As per the latest update from KPSC, the 2 optional papers are removed for the Mains Exam. So the Mains comprises of 7 theory papers. Out of these 7 papers, 2 papers (Kannada and English Language) are qualifying in nature, and the remaining are general studies papers.

After clearing the Prelims and the Mains successfully, the candidates need to appear for the Interview. The Interview is the final round of the KAS exam. The scores of the Mains Exam and the Interview round is considered for the final results. The questions asked in the interview round are usually from current affairs and matters of national interest. However, the questions can be from any place based on the knowledge of the applicant. Also, a lot depends on how the candidate presents herself. Only after qualifying the interview round, the candidate can be employed as a civil service employee.
Once a candidate successfully clears the Prelims, the Mains, and the Interview, the candidate is employed. The pay is generous. The salaries are fixed according to the 7th pay commission.
